UNPINNED COMPOSITE WaveFilter Image Matte Filters This test scene used footage captured with a shoulder held video camera held sideways to capture as much image data as possible. Using the Matte Filters in WaveFilter Image, a matching sequence of clipmap images was created. Both the original sequence and the WaveFilter generated clipmap sequence were mapped to a single polygon in Layout. This created the appearence of the actress, as a LightWave object, walking inside the scene. Download the Zipped AVI animation. (783k) |

This is a frame from the original footage. Notice the number of compositing challenges in this shot. There are many shades of blue, including very dark spots around the treadmill base. There are also strong reflections in the floor. No motion capture camera equipment was used, but the actress does walk on a treadmill. This keeps both the acress and the camera locked down in relation to each other. You need to line up the actress at the proper angle, as required by your scene. Also, check the shadows on the actress to assure they match the scene. Distance from the camera is not a factor, get all the data you can get!
WaveFilter's High/Low Color Range was used in four seperate passes to isolate and remove the unwanted portions of the frame. The first pass removed the majority of the blue background, the second was used to remove the blue halo that existed over the edges of the actress, the third pass removed the dark side halo near the actress, and the fourth pass removed the light side halo near the actress. The black and white image is from a WaveFilter created clipmap sequence using the original actress on blue screen footage.
A single polygon, the same aspect as the original frame and sized to make the actress appear life size, was planer image mapped with the original image sequence. (Actress showed up on a rectangle in the scene) The WaveFilter created clip map sequence was used as a mask to cut away the blue portions of the original frame, leaving only the actress behind. The polygon was rotated to make the actress stand and was moved forward at the same speed she was walking on the treadmill. |

The WaveFilter Image Edge Blend Filter was also used to blend the edges of our actress perfectly into the scene. And because we display the actress only half as large as she was originally captured, the actress object contains great detail and produces a very clean edge. More about High/Low Color Range selections. The Composite Animation The animation shows the actress take a few steps, then walk behind a transparent object, cast shadows on the walls and cast both shadows and reflections on the floor. The actress is an object in your 3D application! Use careful lighting to avoid exposing her 2D nature. Also notice that the camera is pulling back, raising up and panning slightly during the animation, but that no motion capture equipment was used!!! Unpinned compositing really puts the actress into the scene! She could have even walked into and out of light and dark areas. Other than the fact that the actress is really a 2D polygon rather then a 3D object, she will react in a scene just as any other object might.
NOTE: The term “unpinned” comes from the fact that while normal compositing requires that you register, or "pin", the corners of the two frames you wish to composite, unpinned composites allow you to move one image over another image, as a character, and it will automatically interact with the scene. |
